Overview
Art is recognised as an important part of the curriculum at Tully SHS encompassing programs of study in Art, Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Instrumental Music, Media Studies and Film, Television & New Media. Programs of study in The Arts at Tully State High School are based on the Queensland Key Learning Areas for the Arts.
Facilities
Art, Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Instrumental Music and Media Studies all have dedicated specialist facilities which are, with the exception of Art, new and well equipped.
Staff
A balance of specialist and experienced teachers are timetabled to the Arts.
Specific programs
Instrumental Music
A steady number of our Instrumental Students continue their music education post-secondary at the Conservatorium of Music in Brisbane. The program caters for beginners to proficient musicians and includes students with disabilities. There is a balance of group lessons, and participation in various school bands – with band practice occurring on Tuesday afternoons.
Media Studies
Years 7 & 8
In years 7 and 8 students rotate through all Arts subject options - Media Studies, Drama, Visual Art and Music on offer at Tully State High School. This exposes students to the full range of Arts subjects that are available for study as electives in Year 9.
When students participate in the Media Studies component of the Year 7 and 8 curriculum they are introduced to fundamental elements of the study of Digital Communication and gain experience using technology related to the creation of digital media texts and artworks.
Year 9
Students in Year 9 Media Studies study the focus areas of:
- Introduction to key terminology and media concepts. Students explore media codes and conventions, stereotypes and media representations. Students deconstruct a media text.
- Exploration of television news production practices and techniques. Students work in groups to produce a short news story about an aspect of the school.
- Students are introduced to elements of film theory and criticism e.g. film language and criticism. Students write a critical analysis of a feature film.
- Examination of documentary filmmaking techniques. Students produce a short documentary about an aspect of themselves.
Year 10
Students in Year 10 Media Studies study the focus areas of:
- Examination of the techniques used by marketers, advertising agencies and propagandists to manipulate audiences and promote products and ideas.
- Analysis of narrative structure in Traditional Hollywood film. Textual analysis of George Lucas’ Star Wars.
- Investigation of print media formats and production practices.
- Practical exploration of digital SLR photography techniques and skills.
Year 11 & 12
Year 11 & 12 students at TSHS have the option of completing the Media Studies or Film, Television & New Media.
Year 11 Media Studies
Students in Year 11 Media Studies study the focus areas of:
- Evolution of the moving image and related technologies and industries. Students examine new developments in digital media and discuss how new technologies and the rise of the internet have transformed how viewers access film and television content.
- An examination of the strategies employed by movie studios to market their product. Students will view a variety of movie trailers and note the generic elements and objectives. Students will then design and produce a movie trailer.
- Students manipulate film language, codes & conventions to produce a short narrative film. Students will complete design elements - synopsis, storyboards & scripts, and then shoot and edit their film.
- Exploration of the common codes and conventions of promotional videos. Students will design and produce a video highlighting an aspect of the school.
Year 11 Film, Television & New Media
Students in Year 11 Film, Television & New Media study the focus areas of:
- Evolution of the moving image and related technologies and industries. Students examine new developments in digital media and discuss how new technologies and the rise of the internet have transformed how viewers access film and television content.
- Filmmaking techniques: Students will view a variety of movie trailers and note the generic elements and objectives. Students will then design and produce a movie trailer.
- Students study the cult film phenomenon and examine a Cult film director’s work. They discuss the Cult phenomenon that surrounds the film, analysing how the text uses representations, film language, and genre codes and conventions to reach and manipulate its “cult” audience.
- Exploration of the common codes and conventions of promotional videos. Students will design and produce a video segment for the Senior Video or a video that promotes an aspect of the school.
Year 12 Media Studies
Students in Year 12 Media Studies study the focus areas of:
- Evolution of the moving image and related technologies and industries. Students examine new developments in digital media and discuss how new technologies and the rise of the internet have transformed how viewers access film and television content.
