New text message system for student absences

To make things quicker and easier for parents, Tully State High School is implementing a new SMS messaging system for notifying the school about student absences. Attendance officer Tracey Norman said that parents can continue to phone or email the office but if they would prefer, they can now also text message the school instead. Text messages can be sent to 0428 988 801 and need to be written as follows:

  • The first name and surname of the student
  • Year level
  • Date of absence
  • Reason for absence, e.g. sick, holiday, work
  • Name of person sending the text message and their relationship to student, e.g. Mum, dad, guardian, aunt, grandparent, etc.

Therefore, text messages will read as below:

Kelly Smith

Year 10

Friday July 19

Sick

Debbie Smith (mum)

“If we are not properly notified about student absences, on their report card, it is recorded as an ‘unexplained absence’, which doesn’t look good to prospective employers,” said Mrs Norman. The new text messaging system will be monitored to make sure that it is being used correctly, by cross referencing with OneSchool and calling the mobile number to ensure that it is the adult that enrolled the student, not someone else, sending the text messages in. “Every day counts in education which is why it is essential that absences reasons are recorded properly,” said Principal Ms Fox. “For this reason, we strongly encourage parents to write down the attendance office contact details somewhere accessible, on the fridge or at work; to make it as easy as possible for them to notify the school about student absences.”
