Community education counsellor

The purpose of the Community Education Counsellor is to provide educational counselling and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary school students. Assistance is provided for personal, individual support and counselling often for students complex personal situations at home.

Educational support is provided for students, withdrawing them from class as needed. Frequent phone conversations and home visits are made which has helped develop Indigenous parent’s confidence in the school as a supportive place where their children are welcome.

The Community Education Counsellor participates in the development of activities in and out of school. Information is provided to the school community about Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander social and cultural perspectives. Support is provided to up to 50-70 Indigenous and non-indigenous students per week. Indigenous students are assisted to discover their own culture and ensure they know the culture is valued at Tully State High School.
