Years 7-9
Health and Physical Education (Core Subject)
All students in the junior school study the Australian Curriculum for HPE. This subject aims to provide students with lifelong skills and knowledge that can be applied to their own health, lifestyle and wellbeing as well as that of the wider community. They explore a number of health and personal development topics including active lifestyles, nutrition, physical fitness, training methods, body image, mental health, health promotion, risk taking behaviours and safety. They also participate in a variety of physical activities including touch, netball, ultimate disc, futsal, cricket, soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming, athletics, fitness training and minor games.
Year 10
Health and Physical Education (Elective Subject)
In year 10, students again study the Australian Curriculum for HPE, however topics covered are specifically tailored to prepare students for subject options in year 11 and 12. Students investigate Physical Education topics such as ethics in sport and evaluating physical performance. They also investigate health issues within the school and develop action plans to address these.
Sport and Recreation (Elective Subject)
Sport and Recreation is an introduction to the subject of the same name offered in year 11 and 12. Students study the Australian Curriculum and focus on topics related to the sport and recreation industry. Topics include sports first aid, coaching, officiating and event management. This subject has a strong focus on learning through practical activities.
Year 11 and 12
Physical Education General
In Physical Education students investigate a range of topics related to physical activity. The course focuses on learning in, about and through physical activity. There is a strong emphasis on applying concepts to improve physical performance and to increase participation in physical activity. In studying Physical Education, students will learn about:
· motor learning, functional anatomy, biomechanics and physical activity
· sport psychology, equity and physical activity
· tactical awareness, ethics and integrity, and physical activity
· energy, fitness and training, and physical activity.
Students integrate their learning of these topics with physical performance in sports such as Touch, Aquathlon, Badminton, Athletics and Volleyball.
Health Education (General)
In this subject students apply a variety of health frameworks and principles to investigate significant health issues at a school, community and national level. During investigations students gather and analyse primary and secondary data before developing and implementing health promotion strategies and innovations. Health issues investigated include mental health and resilience, alcohol use amongst teens, road safety and the transition of high school graduates to adult life. The research and analysis skills learned through the course would benefit any student interested in pursuing higher education particularly those interested in the Health industry.
Psychology (General)
Psychology is a Science subject which examines human behaviour and underlying cognitions. Students learn about individual development, individual behavior, individual thinking and the influence of others. During the course students design and run their own student experiments related to topic. They also conduct research investigations in which they evaluate a claim of their choice. Psycholoy will develop students investigation, analysis, application, interpretation, evaluation and reasoning skills.
Sport and Recreation (Applied)
This applied subject focuses on the sport and recreation industry examining the role it plays in our community and the activities it encompasses. Students learn about and participate in a variety of sport and recreation activities such as oz-tag, lawn bowls, netball, futsal, hiking, lifesaving, fitness training, fishing and volleyball. They develop skills knowledge related to coaching, officiating, event management and first aid. This subject has a strong focus on learning through practical activities.
Certificate II in Sport and Recreation
This certificate course is offered through an external Registered Trade Organisation – Binnacle Training (RTO. 31319). The course is delivered by a TSHS teacher and involves students participating in various practical activities as well as completing online competency based assessments. Students learn the skills and knowledge needed to organise, facilitate and lead sporting activities. During a course they coach, officiate and manage sporting events within the school and wider community. Students also achieve a first aid and CPR certificate as part of the course.
