HPE Faculty Overview

Years 7-9

Students in the junior school explore a number of health related and personal development related topics including body image, sports psychology, self-esteem/confidence and fitness and training programs. These written components are combined with a physical lesson each week where students develop gross motor, fine motor and general game play skills in a variety of sports and games.

Year 10

In year 10 students who elect to study HPE are given a ‘taste’ of the various year 11 and 12 HPE subjects offered. Topics covered include strength and conditions, nutrition and training programs. Alongside the HPE strand, in partnership with the NRL, Binnacle Training and Northern Pride, we are able to offer an ‘extension’ subject ‘Rugby League Extension’ focusing on player development and game involvement. This class covers strength and conditioning, coaching as well as completing a ‘sports trainer’ skill set, qualifying them to gain 2 QCE points.

Year 11 and 12

Physical Education

As an OP subject, physical education focuses on the development of knowledge and understanding in, through and about sport. This subject integrates the written and practical components such as sports psychology and netball, swimming and training programs and badminton and sociology of sport.

Health Education

This OP subjects utilises a variety of ‘lens’ to inquire about health issues and the impact they have on personal, peer, family, community and the health of specific populations (i.e. the indigenous population). Students in the this subject explore health issues including nutrition, binge drinking, organ donation, dengue fever, schoolies and road trauma.

Recreation Studies

This non-OP subjects focuses on the roles, jobs and opportunities in the recreation industry. Students focus on coaching, designing games, the role of the recreation industry and  assist in primary and secondary carnivals in demonstrating these skills. This subject also includes a unit on hiking giving students the opportunity to walk the Thorsbourne Trail on Hinchinbrook Is.

NRL

This subject is a Cert III in Sport and Recreation and delivered in partnership with the NRL, Binnacle Training and the Northern Pride. Focusing on player development and engagement in the game of Rugby League students are able to gain up to 8 QCE (dependant on completing subject in yr 10) through coaching, officiating, strength and conditioning as well as participating at various NRL and Northern Pride run gala days.
